Pope Francis, aged 88, spent a restful night in Rome's Gemelli hospital as he continues to fight double pneumonia, the Vatican reported on Sunday. The pope, admitted on February 14 after respiratory difficulties, is experiencing a critical condition as diagnosed on Saturday, needing supplemental oxygen and blood transfusions.

The rare double pneumonia has inflamed both of Pope Francis's lungs, complicating his respiratory function. The infection, described by the Vatican as 'complex', is caused by multiple microorganisms. Having previously had part of a lung removed due to pleurisy, the pope is notably vulnerable to such infections.

Leading physicians, including Dr. Sergio Alfieri, caution that Pope Francis's advanced age and frailty heighten risks. With potential spread to the bloodstream, there are concerns of sepsis developing, a perilous condition to manage. The medical team remains vigilant, citing the necessity of close monitoring and advanced care.
