Pope Francis is currently undergoing treatment for double pneumonia, a serious infection inflaming both lungs, at Rome's Gemelli hospital. The 88-year-old spiritual leader was admitted last Tuesday following several days of breathing difficulty, facing a critical health scare that has the Vatican on high alert.

Doctors diagnosed double pneumonia in both lungs, and on Monday, the Vatican provided a slight glimpse of hope, noting the Pope had a "good night" and was able to rest, though he'll receive ongoing medical attention. His kidney function showed signs of minor insufficiency, but on Saturday, he had already required a blood transfusion due to a prolonged respiratory crisis.

Compounding his susceptibility to lung infections, Pope Francis previously had pleurisy as a young man, resulting in partial lung removal. Despite complex circumstances involving multiple microorganisms causing the pneumonia, his current status brings a cautious optimism amidst guarded prognosis.
