One Dollar, One World: A Grassroots Movement Transforming Global Health
Building on its early success, WHO is expanding and evolving the initiative to encourage even greater global participation and solidarity in health.
A Global Movement for Health What began as a grassroots initiative from a dedicated World Health Organization (WHO) staff member has grown into a powerful global movement for health. The 1 Dollar 1 World campaign, first launched as a small-scale effort, has now become a driving force for change, inspiring thousands to take action. Building on its early success, WHO is expanding and evolving the initiative to encourage even greater global participation and solidarity in health.
Uniting for a Common Cause Inspired by the vision of an individual, WHO is now fully supporting the 1 Dollar 1 World movement, urging countries, communities, organizations, and individuals—including WHO's own workforce—to join this effort. In collaboration with the WHO Foundation, WHO aims to amplify awareness of its vital work and increase engagement across the world.
By leveraging crowdfunding as a new approach to global health funding, WHO is activating its network of 150 country offices alongside the WHO Foundation's far-reaching connections. This strategy not only strengthens public participation but also aligns with WHO's broader commitment to diversifying funding sources and reinforcing its ongoing Investment Round to enhance global health initiatives.
Global Impact in Numbers Since its official launch in early 2025, the 1 Dollar 1 World campaign has seen an overwhelming response. Nearly 5,000 people from over 140 countries have contributed to the cause through the WHO Foundation. This high level of engagement showcases the widespread sense of solidarity and shared commitment to ensuring health for all.
Yet, this campaign is about more than just crowdfunding—it is about people standing together to affirm that health is a right, not a privilege. Every action taken, from donations to awareness efforts, contributes to a movement that is shaping the future of global health.
A Call for Action In light of the many global health challenges faced in recent years—ranging from pandemics to humanitarian crises—it has become increasingly clear that no one is safe until everyone is safe. The 1 Dollar 1 World movement is an opportunity for people everywhere to turn concern into action and demonstrate that solidarity, like health, knows no borders.
"The power of the 1 Dollar 1 World movement comes from the people. I would especially like to thank my colleague Tania Cernuschi for her inspiration in launching this initiative," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. "This movement shows that in times of crisis, individuals everywhere can unite to protect and promote the health of others. WHO is proud to stand behind an initiative that embodies the values of solidarity, action, innovation, and hope."
Every Action Counts The 1 Dollar 1 World movement proves that one person can make a difference, and together, we are stronger. "This campaign started with one person, but it belongs to all of us," said Tania Cernuschi, the WHO staff member who initiated the effort. "It is proof that individual actions can spark global impact."
How to Join the Movement Media, organizations, and individuals are encouraged to support, participate, and spread the message of 1 Dollar 1 World. Every contribution—whether a donation, a social media post, or a conversation—helps amplify the message that health should be accessible to all, not just a privileged few.
