Novo Nordisk's CagriSema: A Breakthrough in Obesity Treatment for Diabetics
Novo Nordisk's experimental drug, CagriSema, demonstrated a 15.7% weight reduction in obese individuals with type 2 diabetes over 68 weeks. Key findings from the phase III REDEFINE 2 trial highlight its potential, particularly with dosing flexibility allowing significant weight loss compared to placebo among treated patients.
Novo Nordisk has announced promising results for its next-generation drug, CagriSema, designed for overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes. The drug led to an average weight loss of 15.7% over 68 weeks, according to the company.
This data is pivotal for CagriSema's potential future, especially after a previous trial in non-diabetic individuals resulted in lower-than-expected weight loss. The REDEFINE 2 trial's recent findings were based on a study involving approximately 1,200 people with a BMI of 27 or above, offering flexibility in dosing throughout the trial.
Combining the gut hormone-mimicking semaglutide (Wegovy's active ingredient) and cagrilintide (an amylin mimetic), CagriSema reduces hunger and aids blood glucose control. After 68 weeks, 61.9% of participants on CagriSema were on the highest dose, achieving notable weight loss compared to a 31.1% reduction recorded with placebo.
