Kerala Health Minister Veena George has acknowledged Union Health Minister J P Nadda's promise to increase incentives for ASHA workers. However, she pointed out the stark absence of cash grants under the National Health Mission (NHM) for 2023, casting a shadow over key health initiatives in the state.

During a recent budget discussion in the state assembly, George highlighted the lack of allocation, citing that the financial year saw no central grants. She disclosed that Kerala's attempts to secure funds from the central government had seen only a partial allocation of Rs 189.15 crore for infrastructure, leaving a substantial Rs 636.88 crore gap including ASHA incentives.

The ongoing protest by ASHA workers, now over a month old, underlines the urgency of this issue. As they demand better remuneration and post-retirement benefits, the state's reliance on central funding for NHM schemes draws questions about future healthcare delivery capabilities.
