Parents vs. Platforms: The Battle for Safer Social Media
An Italian parents' group and several families initiated a lawsuit against Meta and TikTok, aiming to enforce stricter access restrictions for minors using social media. The case, heard in Milan's business court, demands stronger age verification and transparency on algorithmic manipulations to protect minors.
In a bid to protect minors from the potential dangers of social media, an Italian parents' group has taken a bold step against tech giants Meta and TikTok. A lawsuit filed in Milan's business court seeks to enforce stricter access controls for users under the age of 14.
The plaintiffs, including MOIGE and several families, demand robust age-verification systems and call for the removal of manipulative algorithms. This legal action underlines the concerns about the risks of social media overuse among children.
Both Meta and TikTok have asserted their commitment to user safety, stating that they have safeguards in place. However, the issue of jurisdiction and algorithmic harm remains a contentious point, with the European Union also eyeing potential regulations in its Digital Fairness Act.
