Two minor brothers drowned in a canal in Ghazipur district here on Thursday, police said.

The incident took place in Kanuwan village under the Shadiyabad police station area.

According to police, Kishan Kanojia (14) and Shivraj Kanojia (13), sons of Jaggu Kanojia, had gone to bathe in the canal along with their younger brother, Anantraj Kanojia, when the incident took place.

During the bath, Shivraj was swept away by the strong current and began drowning. Seeing him in distress, Kishan jumped into the canal in an attempt to rescue him, but he too was swept away, police said.

Anantraj, who was standing outside the canal, raised an alarm, following which locals rushed to the spot and pulled the two brothers out of the water.

The boys were taken to a hospital where doctors declared them dead, police added.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jakhania Atul Kumar described the incident as tragic and said the state government would provide appropriate assistance to the bereaved family.

Police said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
