Essential aid shipments have landed in northeastern Congo to assist in managing a severe Ebola outbreak. Medical supplies like masks, gloves, and medications, supplied by the European Union, are addressing equipment shortages faced by health workers on the ground.
Conditions are further strained by ongoing conflicts and public mistrust. The World Health Organisation's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has announced plans to visit the region in response to the crisis, which has seen more than 1,000 suspected cases and over 220 confirmed deaths.
The humanitarian effort is being complicated by violence from armed groups, inadequate infrastructure, and logistical hurdles. The Congolese government, along with international agencies, is working to stem the virus's spread across multiple provinces, with the disease also crossing into Uganda.
The WHO has declared this outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, aiming to galvanize further international aid and support.
