A recent government survey has revealed an uptick in the use of hygienic menstrual protection methods among Indian women aged 15-24. The National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6) shows an increase from 77.6% in 2019-21 to 79.2% in 2023-24.

This positive trend is largely attributed to initiatives like the Menstrual Hygiene Scheme (MHS) and affordable sanitary products under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana. These programs have significantly improved awareness and accessibility to safe menstrual practices.

Besides menstrual hygiene, the survey highlights a dramatic rise in internet usage, with the percentage of women going online nearly doubling from 33.3% in 2019-2021 to 64.3% in 2023-24. Financial inclusion has also progressed, as more women now possess banking accounts and personal mobile phones.

According to the Union health ministry, these advances reflect broader gains in women's empowerment and access to essential services, reinforcing India's progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nevertheless, challenges like non-communicable diseases and nutrition-related issues demand ongoing attention.
