During World No Tobacco Day, health experts expressed concern over children being major targets for new tobacco and nicotine products. These products, often enhanced with appealing flavors and designs, ensnare young users, driven by strategic industry marketing.
Dr Shalini Singh highlighted that children and young adults are principal targets due to the allure of perceived reduced harm. The ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research was honored by WHO for their tobacco control achievements, underscoring ongoing challenges.
Dr Alok Thakar and other health figures stressed the persistent burden tobacco imposes on India's healthcare, noting many tobacco-related diseases are preventable. Experts encourage education and community involvement to arm children against manipulation and foster informed decision-making.
Despite India's e-cigarette ban, concerns about illegal sales linger, emphasizing the need for vigilance in protecting youth from nicotine addiction and its health impacts.
