With life expectancy on the rise and nations confronting the challenges of ageing populations, the upcoming International Day of Yoga on June 21 is adopting the theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'. This initiative, revealed at the 'Yoga Mahotsav: 25-Day Countdown to IDY 2026', aims to advocate for yoga’s role in promoting longevity, flexibility, and overall well-being.

The 12th edition's theme, announced by Prataprao Jadhav from the Ministry of Ayush, reflects the current global need to gracefully embrace longer lives through ancient practices. Increasing research supports yoga as a means to counter age-related health issues, and the theme highlights yoga’s role in encouraging a proactive approach to healthspan, emphasizing quality of life over mere lifespan extension.

The economic significance of this theme is underscored by the rapid growth of India’s senior-focused market, estimated at nearly Rs 73,000 crore. By promoting protocols tailored for the elderly, India positions itself at the forefront of integrating wellness with economic growth. Moreover, initiatives such as 'Yoga 365' and 'Yoga Samavesh' extend yoga’s reach to promote ongoing engagement and inclusion among the elderly.

As preparations for IDY 2026 advance, this theme underlines the vital role of yoga in fostering a holistic approach to ageing, supporting the government's broader agenda to empower the elderly through innovative health solutions and societal participation.
