India's parks and public spaces are set to play a bigger role in promoting health and well-being with the launch of the Yoga Park Portal, a new initiative by the Ministry of Ayush aimed at creating dedicated community wellness hubs across the country.
The portal was unveiled by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, during the 25-day countdown event for International Day of Yoga 2026 in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Introduced alongside the revamped Yoga Sangam Portal, the initiative seeks to make yoga and wellness activities more accessible within neighbourhoods and local communities.
Turning Parks Into Everyday Wellness Spaces
The Yoga Park initiative focuses on transforming existing parks into spaces where people can regularly practice yoga, meditation, and other wellness activities. The Ministry envisions these locations as more than recreational grounds, creating environments that encourage healthy living, preventive healthcare, and stronger community engagement.
Panchayati Raj Institutions, Urban Local Bodies, Resident Welfare Associations, non-governmental organisations, corporate groups, and other institutions can participate in developing Yoga Parks through the portal. The platform offers registration facilities, guidelines, concept notes, and resources to support implementation across urban and rural areas.
Dedicated yoga platforms, meditation zones, open-air wellness areas, green landscapes, and spaces for community sessions can be incorporated into participating parks, making them suitable for people from different age groups and backgrounds.
Community Participation at the Centre
One of the key features of the programme is its collaborative approach. Local authorities and community organisations will play an important role in identifying and maintaining suitable locations, while yoga institutions can help conduct awareness campaigns and regular practice sessions.
The initiative also opens the door for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) participation. Companies can contribute to the development of Yoga Parks and support wellness infrastructure that directly benefits local residents. According to the Ministry, such contributions can leave a lasting public health impact by creating accessible spaces for daily physical activity, mindfulness practices, and health awareness programmes.
Participating organisations may also receive recognition for supporting community well-being, encouraging greater private-sector involvement in preventive healthcare initiatives.
Supporting a Healthier Future
The Yoga Park Portal aligns with the International Day of Yoga 2026 theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing." As concerns around stress, lifestyle-related illnesses, and age-related health issues continue to grow, accessible public wellness spaces can encourage healthier routines and stronger social connections.
The Ministry believes the initiative can create a lasting legacy that extends beyond annual yoga celebrations. While large-scale yoga events help spread awareness, dedicated Yoga Parks offer year-round opportunities for citizens to engage with wellness practices in their daily lives.
Over the years, International Day of Yoga has grown into one of the world's largest wellness movements. The Yoga Park initiative builds on that foundation by creating permanent community spaces that support healthier lifestyles, environmental harmony, and holistic well-being. As more parks join the programme, the initiative could become a significant part of India's growing focus on preventive healthcare and public wellness.
