A delegation from the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) participated in the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias (IMWP) and the accompanying Stakeholders' Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil, from 15 to 17 June 2026.

The Indian delegation was led by Dr V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director of IPC, along with Dr Pawan Saini and Dr Shruti Rastogi. The event was coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and brought together representatives from leading pharmacopoeias across the world. Delegates from Brazil, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and the WHO's International Pharmacopoeia participated in discussions focused on medicine quality standards and global regulatory cooperation.

Indian Pharmacopoeia Earns Global Recognition

During the meeting, Dr Kalaiselvan presented updates on developments within the Indian Pharmacopoeia, highlighting progress in modernising standards and strengthening quality benchmarks for medicines. Discussions reaffirmed that Indian Pharmacopoeia standards are comparable with those maintained by major international pharmacopoeias. India also received recognition for its contributions to developing quality standards for a range of critical medicines and healthcare products.

Particular attention was given to India's work in establishing standards for anti-tuberculosis medicines, cancer treatments, blood and blood products, medicines used in the treatment of anaemia and several complex pharmaceutical compounds.

The recognition reflects the country's expanding scientific capabilities and its growing role in advancing pharmaceutical quality and regulatory standards at the international level.

Focus on Innovation, Sustainability and Global Cooperation

The Indian delegation actively participated in technical discussions covering modern microbiological methods, pharmacopoeial convergence and environmental sustainability within pharmaceutical standards. At the Stakeholders' Meeting, IPC highlighted its contribution to public health through science-based standards and regulatory support mechanisms that help ensure the safety, quality and effectiveness of medicines.

India also emphasised the importance of international collaboration in addressing evolving healthcare challenges and strengthening global confidence in pharmaceutical products. Officials noted that participation in the meeting further strengthened India's engagement with international pharmacopoeial bodies while creating opportunities for deeper cooperation on harmonised standards and regulatory best practices. The event reinforced India's growing influence in shaping global pharmaceutical quality frameworks and highlighted its commitment to ensuring that patients worldwide have access to safe, effective and high-quality medicines.
