A terror alert has been issued for anti-encroachment police in Karachi, warning of potential terrorist attacks during Muharram, reports ARY News. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karachi, Tariq Islam, has issued safety guidelines advising police officers to avoid going alone on official duty.
The notification also warned that government officials in Karachi could be targeted during Muharram. Officials were instructed to use police vans for assignments and avoid wearing uniforms and shoes when returning home after duty. The federal government has sanctioned the deployment of armed forces nationwide to secure the month of Muharram.
This decision follows requests from authorities in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad to deploy military for maintaining law and order. Under Article 245 of the Constitution, the government authorized the deployment of troops to ensure peace, according to ARY News.
Pakistan's Interior Ministry stated that army deployment would be based on the ground situation, with provinces determining the locations. Pakistan's Punjab government has requested a temporary suspension of social media platforms from July 6-11 during Muharram processions.
Security measures have been intensified across various regions of Pakistan. Pakistani media reports that 502 locations in Punjab have been identified as sensitive areas, resulting in the deployment of army and Rangers personnel.
Muharram is deeply significant for Shia Muslims, yet Pakistan has a history of sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia communities during this period, reports ANI.
