Abu Dhabi Introduces Innovative Gene Therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

For the first time in Abu Dhabi, the Department of Health has administered a revolutionary gene transfer therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The treatment, provided at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, marks a significant milestone in the emirate's healthcare advancements.

Abu Dhabi [UAE], August 2 (ANI/WAM): The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) has introduced groundbreaking gene transfer therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in the emirate. This pivotal treatment was executed at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), a unit of SEHA, underscoring Abu Dhabi's ascent as a global healthcare leader.

On March 19, 2024, the treatment was successfully administered to the first DMD patient in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams at DoH's Research and Innovation Centre (RIC). The therapy, formerly available only in the US, was overseen by a specialist team led by a consultant pediatric neurologist.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a severe genetic disorder causing progressive muscle degeneration. Delandistrogene moxeparvovec, a one-time injectable treatment, targets the genetic root of DMD by delivering functional dystrophin genes to the patient's cells, promising a substantial improvement in muscle function and overall quality of life.
