The United States is enhancing its military footprint in the Middle East following the assassination of senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this week, CNN reported. The Pentagon has deployed a carrier strike group, a fighter squadron, and additional warships amid rising tensions.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt group, which is currently stationed in the Gulf of Oman, according to deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh. The deployment includes destroyers and cruisers with ballistic missile defense capabilities headed to the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea.
"Austin also ordered the deployment of a fighter squadron to the region," Singh added. The US already has the USS Wasp amphibious assault ship in the area, functioning with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and ready to evacuate US citizens from Lebanon if necessary.
Iran has pledged to attack Israel in retaliation for the killing of Haniyeh. Hundreds of mourners, including Khaled Meshaal—a potential successor—gathered at Qatar's largest mosque for Haniyeh's funeral. Leading the service in Tehran, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened severe retribution and ordered a direct strike on Israel.
