In a significant move to address Bangladesh's political turmoil, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement have proposed Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus to head an interim government. This proposal comes amid ongoing chaos following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.
The proposal was revealed early Tuesday in a video message by key student leaders Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud, and Abu Bakar Mazumdar. Nahid had previously indicated that an outline for the interim government would be drafted within 24 hours. This comes in response to Sheikh Hasina's departure after a violent crackdown on protests demanding her resignation, resulting in hundreds of deaths.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin has endorsed the formation of an interim government to stabilize the nation. In a crucial meeting at Bangabhaban involving military chiefs, political party leaders, and civil society members, the Army was tasked with restoring order. The law and order situation had deteriorated severely after Hasina left the country on Monday.
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that acting chairman Tarique Rahman would return to Bangladesh soon. Rahman has been living in self-imposed exile due to what BNP claims are false charges. Fakhrul emphasized unity among political parties and the public to control the situation, urging restraint and protection for religious minorities.
