Former US President Donald Trump's presidential campaign announced on Saturday that it had been hacked, according to US-based news agency Politico. The declaration followed an anonymous email sent from an AOL account identifying itself as 'Robert,' which contained internal documents from Trump's campaign, Politico reported.
The campaign referenced a Microsoft report released on Friday, blaming 'foreign sources hostile to the United States' for the breach. The report highlighted Iranian hackers who allegedly sent a spear phishing email to a high-ranking campaign official in June. However, Microsoft did not specify which campaign was targeted.
Politico noted that it could not verify the hacker's identity or the motive behind the breach. Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated that the documents obtained were intended to disrupt the 2024 election and sow discord. A senior Trump campaign official provided Politico with emails containing research dossiers on JD Vance and Senator Marco Rubio. The Iranian mission to the UN dismissed the hacking claims, emphasizing Iran's lack of intent or motive to interfere in US elections.
