Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has decided not to run in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) leadership election next month, according to NHK News. During a news conference on Wednesday, Kishida explained his decision.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a transparent election and free debate to signal the party's intent to change. Kishida praised his government's efforts in addressing issues like wage increases, deflation, energy policy, and declining birthrate. He also highlighted the enhancement of Japan's defense capabilities under his leadership. 'I am proud that my administration was able to produce such major achievements,' Kishida stated, noting he would support a new leader.

Local election losses and a political funding scandal involving unreported funds from party event ticket sales have weakened Kishida's influence. Despite efforts from senior LDP members to persuade him to stay, some view his resignation as irresponsible due to unresolved issues. Kishida's approval ratings have plunged since the scandal. Former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Digital Minister Taro Kono are among those planning to run in the election, according to Kyodo News. The race may also include several other prominent LDP figures.
