PPP, PTI Criticize Punjab's Short-term Power Relief Plan

The PPP and PTI have criticized the Punjab government's two-month power relief plan, labeling it as a short-term, optics-driven move. The subsidy, announced by PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, faces scrutiny for its sustainability, with opposing voices advocating for long-term solutions to the power crisis.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have voiced their criticism against the Punjab government's temporary power relief plan. According to Pakistan-based Geo News, they described it as an optics-driven decision. The critique followed an announcement by ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif promising two months of power subsidies to residents consuming up to 500 units.

During Geo News' 'Naya Pakistan' program, PPP leader Murtaza Wahab remarked that governments should prioritize long-term relief rather than short-term measures. Wahab highlighted that this relief would cost the provincial government PKR 45 billion and last only two months. He also accused the PML-N of hastily signing contracts with independent power producers (IPPs), urging for sustainable planning in collaboration with PPP.

Adviser on Finance to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Muzammil Aslam, also condemned the subsidy plan, describing it as a waste of public resources. Aslam pointed out the high cost of electricity production in Punjab, comparing it to the more affordable generation in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Nawaz and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a reduction in development funds to offer the power subsidy, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif supporting the move as part of broader efforts to address the power crisis sustainably.
