South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has issued a stark warning, promising a 'resolute and overwhelming' retaliation from the South Korea-US alliance should North Korea resort to nuclear weapons. Speaking at the 76th Armed Forces Day ceremony, Yoon cautioned that such actions by Pyongyang would spell the end of its regime, according to Yonhap news agency.
The strong remarks came in response to recent developments, including North Korea's publication of photos showing its uranium enrichment facility and centrifuges used for nuclear bomb fuel. North Korea's nuclear activities conflict with several United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The ceremony also spotlighted the unveiling of advanced military hardware, including the Hyunmoo-5 missile capable of carrying heavy warheads to target underground bunkers. South Korea also launched its new Strategic Command, aimed at countering North Korean threats. This unit, announced in 2022 and led by Air Force Lt. Gen. Jin Young-sung, will work in tandem with the US Strategic Command to integrate their military capabilities and enhance deterrence through the Nuclear Consultative Group.
