In the Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the closure of more than a dozen schools for girls has sparked concerns over the future of female education. Most primary girls' schools operate with just one teacher, affecting educational quality significantly.

Sources indicate that the shutdown began in January 2023, coinciding with the caretaker government's installation. They noted that transfers based on local leaders' recommendations further worsened the staffing crisis in schools.

Attempts to address this issue have seen little success, despite repeated requests to the education directorate in Peshawar. The situation remains dire, putting girls' education at risk and prompting calls for urgent intervention.
