The planned commemoration for esteemed philosopher and Sufi saint, Lalon Fakir, in Bangladesh was abruptly cancelled after significant pressure from various Islamic factions, local sources disclosed on Thursday.

Scheduled at Madhupur Upazila Bus Stand by Madhupur Lalon Sangha for Lalon's 134th death anniversary, the event was scrapped after objections by Hefazat-e-Islam, the country's dominant Islamic organization. Previous years had seen unhindered festivals, yet this year organizers expressed regret for the cancellation due to 'unavoidable circumstances,' reported Dhaka-based Samakal newspaper.

Bibartan Cultural Centre condemned the incident, criticizing Hefajat Islam and the Ulama Parishad's local branch for determining that Lalon's ideologies should not be propagated. The cultural clashes come amid broader unrest with accusations of censorship following the fall of the Hasina government. The interim Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, condemned recent mob attacks on cultural fairs, underscoring a rising tide of cultural indignation and the need for legal protections.
