Cross-Border Waters: Indian Fishermen Released Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Twenty-two Indian fishermen detained in Pakistan between 2021 and 2022 have been released, returning via the Attari-Wagah border. Amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts, another 180 remain in Pakistani prisons. Concurrently, 15 fishermen were repatriated from Sri Lanka, highlighting continued challenges for Indian fishermen in international waters.

In a notable development, 22 Indian fishermen held by Pakistan for fishing in its waters between 2021 and 2022 have been released. The fishermen, hailing from regions like Gujarat, Diu, and Uttar Pradesh, crossed back into India via the Attari-Wagah border on Saturday, confirmed Arunpal Singh, a Protocol Officer stationed there.

Singh elaborated on their ordeal, stating that the fishermen had served varying sentences, with some imprisoned for up to 36 months. Enthusiasm filled the air upon their return, signaling relief after their prolonged captivity. The freed group comprises primarily individuals from Gujarat, with others from Diu and Uttar Pradesh.

Yet, a grim backdrop persists — an Indian fisherman reportedly died in a Karachi jail this January, despite having served his sentence. Over the past two years, Pakistan has seen the deaths of eight Indian fishermen, while 180 others await release. India continues to lobby for their expedited release.

Meanwhile, a different international incident saw 15 Indian fishermen return home from Sri Lanka, landing in Chennai. Their repatriation feeds into a broader narrative of maritime disputes, which recently incited protests brandishing demands for the return of other detained fishermen, as voiced by Tamil Nadu MPs and CM MK Stalin.

Adding to the diplomatic strain, the recent release of 41 Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities punctuates the recurrent territorial skirmishes over fishing rights. The detainees, mainly from Ramanathapuram, were seized near Katchatheevu, underscoring the ongoing geopolitical challenges facing Indian fishermen.
