The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is reportedly scheduled to visit Bangladesh in mid-March, amid escalating political tensions in the region. The announcement follows the visit of UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, who laid the groundwork for Guterres' anticipated arrival, particularly focusing on the humanitarian crisis involving Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar.
Md Touhid Hossain, Adviser for Foreign Affairs, informed the media that while the UN chief's program is still being finalized, the three-day visit is expected to commence on March 13. The visit is deemed significant as Bangladesh navigates through a politically charged atmosphere.
Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman recently raised concerns in Dhaka, warning that continued political discord could jeopardize the nation’s sovereignty. He emphasized the need for unity and peaceful co-existence, reiterating the government's commitment to conducting free, fair, and inclusive national elections, with planned reforms to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process.
