Japan's political landscape is poised for a historic shift as Sanae Takaichi, the former Internal Affairs Minister, declared her candidacy for the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The announcement, reported by Kyodo News, adds Takaichi to a list of major contenders seeking to replace outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

Takaichi, known for her staunch conservatism and close ideological ties with the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, expressed her ambitions during a meeting with ex-Prime Minister Taro Aso. At 64, she aims to break new ground as Japan’s first female prime minister, entering a competitive race on October 4 against Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and other high-profile candidates.

In a recent Kyodo News poll, Takaichi emerged as a leading candidate, with 28% support nationwide. However, within the LDP, Koizumi is favored by 36% of supporters. The campaign period will begin on September 22, ahead of the October leadership contest triggered by Ishiba's early resignation following an electoral setback.
