The Iranian naval vessel, IRIS Lavan, part of the fleet for the International Fleet Review 2026, has stopped in Kochi due to technical difficulties, according to Indian government sources. The request to dock the ship was made just before the joint US and Israeli military operations south of Sri Lanka unfolded.

Requests for urgent docking support were filed by Iran on February 28, emphasizing the immediacy of the repairs needed. India granted docking approval on March 1, following regional conflicts. The IRIS Lavan finally docked in Kochi on March 4, with its 183-strong crew now residing in naval facilities there.

Meanwhile, the fate of IRIS Dena has been grim. The ship was downed by a US submarine torpedo near Galle, Sri Lanka, with 87 sailors feared dead. This incident happened amidst growing Middle East tensions after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, with Iran responding with aggressive missile and drone attacks.
