Penguins activate D Schultz (leg) after 4-month absence

The Pittsburgh Penguins activated defenseman Justin Schultz from injured reserve, the team announced Friday. Schultz has missed 53 games since suffering a fractured left leg against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 13.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan told reporters after Friday's practice that Schultz would be a game-time decision for Saturday afternoon's home game against the Calgary Flames. Pittsburgh also plays Sunday afternoon at home against the New York Rangers.

Schultz, 28, had four assists in three games this season before playing Montreal, when he was injured in the first period. Tomas Plekanec checked Schultz into the boards deep in the Penguins zone, sending Schultz to the ice. As the defenseman went down, his left leg folded under the weight of his body. Traded to the Penguins by Edmonton for a third-round pick during the 2015-16 season, Schultz has won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh. In two full seasons and parts of two others with the Penguins, he has 90 points (17 goals, 73 assists) and a plus-57 rating in 163 games, averaging 19:14 of ice time.
