India Urges Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz Amid US-Iran Tensions
India reaffirms its stance for secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as tensions rise with US strikes on vessels carrying Indian seafarers. The Ministry of External Affairs expresses concern over the attacks and hopes for a swift resolution.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated India's strong stance on ensuring "unimpeded and safe navigation" through the Strait of Hormuz amidst escalating tensions in West Asia. This follows recent U.S. strikes on three commercial vessels, carrying Indian crew, leading to fatalities and raising India's concerns.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India consistently advocates for the free movement of vessels through the strategic waterway, stressing the importance of adherence to international law. Speaking on U.S. actions against foreign-flagged ships, Jaiswal confirmed ongoing monitoring of the situation, hoping for a de-escalation soon.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) admitted to targeting vessels, including the Guinea-Bissau-flagged MT Jalveer, for violating a blockade against Iran. With fatalities reported and efforts underway to repatriate the deceased, India's MEA remains focused on addressing this critical geopolitical challenge. The ongoing blockade highlights the broader conflict involving U.S.-Iran tensions over the strategic control of the Strait of Hormuz.
