Sharks acquire Nyquist from Red Wings for picks

The San Jose Sharks sent second- and third-round picks to the Detroit Red Wings for Gustav Nyquist late Sunday evening, hours after Nyquist scored a goal in the Sharks' 5-3 win at Detroit. Detroit will receive a 2019 second-round pick -- the lower of the Sharks' and Panthers' picks -- and a 2020 third-rounder in return. The latter pick would convert to a second-rounder if the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup Final this season or re-sign Nyquist, who had to waive his no-trade clause to complete the trade.

Nyquist, 29, is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, as he is in the final year of a four-year, $19 million contract. According to reports, the Red Wings will retain 30 percent of Nyquist's $4.75 million salary and cap hit for this season, helping the Sharks stay under the salary cap. "Gustav is a talented, versatile forward who plays with speed and a strong hockey sense," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "His track record of strong play and character speak for themselves, and we're very excited to add him to our dressing room."

Including Sunday night's tally, the Swede has 16 goals and 33 assists in 62 games this season, his sixth full campaign in the NHL since the Wings took him in the fourth round of the 2008 draft. He needs three assists and six points to tie personal bests in both categories. Nyquist totaled 125 goals and 170 assists in 481 career games with Detroit across parts of eight seasons. He's missed just seven games over the last five years.
