Stone gets contract extension from Knights for eight years

The Vegas Golden Knights agreed to a contract extension with Mark Stone on Monday, shortly after they acquired the right winger from the Ottawa Senators. The contract will be for eight years and worth $9.5 million annually, Bob McKenzie of TSN reported. Stone confirmed with the network that he and the team have agreed to a deal but declined to confirm the terms.

The Senators received highly regarded defensive prospect Erik Brannstrom, forward Oscar Lindberg and a 2020 second-round draft pick that originally belonged to the Dallas Stars, according to multiple outlets. "Obviously, there are some mixed feelings," Stone said in an interview on TSN. "I'm so excited to be joining the team. Just seeing what they did in the playoffs was unbelievable. But I enjoyed my time in Ottawa. I love the city. So many great people here."

The deal means that the Senators have parted with their top three scorers in a matter of days. The Senators also sent Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel to the Columbus Blue Jackets in separate deals. Stone, 26, has 28 goals and 34 assists (62 points) in 59 games this season. The former sixth-round draft pick in 2010 by the Senators has 123 career goals and 188 assists (311 points) in 366 career games, all with Ottawa. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season.

Stone earned first-team all-rookie honours in the 2014-15 season and has appeared in 27 playoff games, scoring five goals with eight assists (13 points). Brannstrom, 19, was a first-round pick by the Golden Knights in the 2017 draft. He has seven goals and 21 assists (28 points) in 41 games got Chicago of the American Hockey League.

Lindberg, 27, has four goals and 12 points in 35 games this season. He was acquired by the Golden Knights from the New York Rangers in the expansion draft.
