Large numbers of Islamic State fighters and their families surrendered on Tuesday to U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces who are on the brink of seizing the jihadists' final enclave in eastern Syria, the SDF said.
Mustafa Bali, head of the SDF media office, told Reuters that fighters had surrendered en masse. "Once our forces confirm that everyone who wants to surrender has done so, ... the clashes will resume," he said. He said the final defeat of the jihadists at Baghouz was very close. A Reuters journalist in Baghouz saw hundreds of people surrendering to the SDF.
