Ethiopian airlines do not have the initial report, was briefed on the report by phone by investigators, its spokesman has confirmed. Ethiopian airlines flight 302 repeatedly nose-dived before it crashed, a statement from the airline said, citing the preliminary report into the March 10 crash that was released on Thursday.

"Despite all their hard work and full compliance with emergency procedures, it was very unfortunate that they could not recover the aeroplane from the persistence (of) nose-diving," the airline's statement on Twitter said.

Earlier The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that pilots on the doomed Ethiopian plane initially followed emergency steps outlined by Boeing but still could not regain control. The pilots shut off the anti-stall system, called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, but switched it back on because they could not regain control, The Journal reported, citing people briefed on the preliminary findings.

The crash killed all 157 people on board and led to a global grounding of 737 MAX jets. Boeing had issued guidelines to pilots about shutting off an automated anti-stall system in the wake of a deadly crash in Indonesia less than five months earlier.
