UNSC calls for more efforts to curb terrorism after deadly Sri Lanka attack
The international institutions, civil society groups iterate stand to break nexus between terrorism, organized crime and groups behind terror financing, arms supplies.
In the wake of the deadly attack in Sri Lanka and New Zealand where hundreds of people lost precious lives in most heinous ways have led growing fears in world fraternity. To curb this deadly menace, United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is holding key meet to discuss ways to curb terrorism.
UNSC special meet led by member nations and other organizations reiterate its stand to fight against terrorism. The world fraternity calls for sharing more information and increased focus on financial intelligence to halt terror-related activities across the globe. The international institutions, civil society groups also expressed their stand to break nexus between terrorism, organized crime and groups behind terror financing, arms supplies.
UNSC's counter-terrorism deputy head, Weixiong Chen, speaking at the event said, "We must work to overcome inter-institutional barriers to information-sharing among institutions, and interlocutors responsible for countering terrorism, and those responsible for combating organized crime", he said, adding that "we must also address the current limited use of financial intelligence and limited understanding of the factors and vulnerabilities that could foster the establishment of some forms of cooperation between criminal groups" and terrorist groups, or their affiliates.
The Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee recently adopted an addendum to its guiding principles on foreign terrorist fighters, recalling the "need to intensify and accelerate" exchanging financial information to expose links with organized crime. "Rest assured that CTED will continue to make a full contribution to those efforts", he added.
In 2018, there is reportedly a fall in a number of terror incidents and deaths but world bodies fear that it could gain pace if urgent backstopping of related events are not being implemented. With the fall of Islamic State, the UNSC aims to hammer all the links that could grow scourage among people across the globe.
