An Argentine lawmaker from the northern province of La Rioja was wounded on Thursday and an aide was killed in a shooting about a block from the National Congress in downtown Buenos Aires. Congressman Hector Olivares was shot three times by two attackers early Thursday morning. His adviser, Miguel Yadon, was also shot and died at the scene.

The director of emergency services in the city of Buenos Aires, Alberto Crescenti, said in televised statements that Olivares was in "serious condition" after undergoing surgery at a Buenos Aires hospital. Officials have not released information on the suspects' identities or a possible motive for the attack. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich is expected to hold a news conference later Thursday.

"There are no words to explain what happened. I hope he recovers and can clarify what happened," former Argentina Vice President Julio Cobos said on his Twitter account.
