A 30 year-old constable allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his home in police quarters in suburban Kalina here, an official said on Monday.

According to the official, the deceased constable, Nikhil Shankar More, was attached to the Marol local arms (LA) wing of the Mumbai police.

His wife, too, is in the police force and attached to the same department, he said, adding the couple has a five-month-old baby.

The incident came to light on Monday afternoon after his neighbours alerted the police when they noticed foul smell coming out from his flat, the official said.

A local police team reached the spot and found More hanging from the ceiling fan, he said.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot and the cause of the extreme step by the constable, who was living alone in the flat for the last few months, was not immediately known, the official said.

More's wife had been residing at her native place after delivery of the baby, he added.

On the basis of preliminary information, the Vakola police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and further investigation was on, the official added.
