The Rwandan government in their new law has planned to showcase the name of the people in Rwandan media, found guilty in the corruption cases. According to a government official, this will make people go get less involved in immoral cases.
Senior Rwandan politician Anastase Murekezi in a press conference said, "The issue of case backlog has been a challenge for many years. This dates to as back as 2013 when we have added the mandate of looking into cases whose defendants were not fully satisfied with the appeals court final decision," as reported by All Africa.
Murekezi while addressing the media also raised the bail issue. He appealed to the courts to release the accused of corruption as they pose less threat to the society.
"Of course there is the window of appeal but when it comes to corruption, I think that these appeal cases should be scrutinised more because the suspects can flee," he said.
Earlier the people involved in small corruption cases would be named but now after adding theft as a corruption could see the high rise in the list.
As quoted by All Africa, Odette Yankurije Deputy Ombudsman said, "that in previous law a complainant had to write to the Ombudsman if they felt the verdict was unjust, the present law requires the complainant to instead write to a higher court than the one that delivered the judgment."
According to Transparency International Rwanda ranks 48 out of 180 countries in Corruption Perceptions Index 2017.
