Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi on Tuesday paid a surprise visit to the Sabarmati Central Jail, where gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed is among the high-profile inmates, and held a meeting with senior prison officials, sources said.Besides Ahmed, a key accused in the 2005 killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal, several convicts of the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case are lodged in the Sabarmati jail here.Ahmed, a former Member of Parliament, was recently booked in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the Raju Pal murder case.

Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi on Tuesday paid a surprise visit to the Sabarmati Central Jail, where gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed is among the high-profile inmates, and held a meeting with senior prison officials, sources said.

Besides Ahmed, a key accused in the 2005 killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal, several convicts of the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case are lodged in the Sabarmati jail here.

Ahmed, a former Member of Parliament, was recently booked in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the Raju Pal murder case. Umesh Pal was shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24.

Sources said Sanghavi visited the high-security jail in the evening and held a meeting for nearly an hour with senior officials, including Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) KLN Rao.

As directed by the Supreme Court, Ahmed was transferred to the high-security prison in Ahmedabad from Naini jail in Uttar Pradesh in June 2019. Hailing from Prayagraj, the 60-year-old controversial politician is also a former member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
