Greek leftist leader Tsipras says resigns as Syriza party leader

Greece's Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday he was stepping down from the helm of his Syriza party following its defeat in Sunday's election.

"The time has come to start a new cycle," Tsipras said in a televised address, adding that a reform of the party was necessary. "The negative result can - and must - become the beginning of this cycle."
