Depressed Mumbai constable ends life

A 27-year-old police constable, who was under depression due to an illness, allegedly committed suicide Monday by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Worli police camp here, police said.

The constable, identified as Vinod Jadhav, was spotted hanging by his mother in the wee hours, a police official said.

Jadhav was attached to Mahim police station.

Worli police station senior inspector Sukhlal Varpe said the constable was depressed due to jaundice, which might have prompted him to take the extreme step. He was staying with his mother.

"Jadhav woke up after 3 AM and hanged himself in a room in his house," Varpe said.

After his mother raised an alarm, Jadhav's neighbours rushed to the spot and rushed him to hospital, where he was declared dead before admission, the senior inspector said.

Jadhav hailed from Sangli district in western Maharashtra.
