An Assam Police sub-inspector was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000 in Nalbari district on Tuesday, police said. SI Panbendra Das, in-charge of Dhamdhoma police outpost under Ghoghrapara Police Station, was caught by an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) team led by deputy superintendent of police when he was accepting the alleged bribe amount from complainant Hussain Ali, a police spokesman said.

The accused had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 for providing relaxation in a cross-case, he said. The complainant had already paid the first "instalment" of Rs 4,000 yesterday, the spokesman said.

The official added that the complainant was the father of a recent rape victim, who is a minor. The accused in the rape case was arrested by district police and the family of the arrested accused had filed a cross-case relating to a loan matter against the father of the rape victim.

The sub-inspector of the police outpost was allegedly threatening the rape victims economically challenged father with arrest at a time when he has arranged the marriage of his elder daughter, the police spokesman said. The complainant then approached the ACB in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption and a trap was laid as per standard procedure, the spokesman added.

The sub-inspector has been arrested and will be forwarded to a special court on Wednesday, he said.
