President Cyril Ramaphosa recently engaged in a bilateral telephone conversation with European Council President Charles Michel, as confirmed by a statement from the Presidency. The discussion covered a range of topics including bilateral, regional, and global issues, with an emphasis on positive and constructive dialogue.

The leaders highlighted the importance of increased engagement to address global peace and reiterated their commitment to respecting international law. They welcomed recent bilateral dialogues between South Africa and the European Union, such as the Political and Security Dialogue Forum and the Human Rights Dialogue, agreeing to further enhance cooperation to promote stability and prosperity.

In addressing global challenges, President Ramaphosa and President Michel emphasized the significance of upholding the UN Charter, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, particularly in conflict zones like Ukraine and the Middle East. They called for urgent action to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, secure the release of hostages, and provide humanitarian assistance, in accordance with the rulings of the International Court of Justice.

Regarding tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, both leaders stressed the importance of seeking political solutions and immediate, lasting ceasefires.

Looking ahead, President Ramaphosa and President Michel agreed to strengthen collaboration in preparation for South Africa's upcoming Presidency of the G20 in 2025, with a focus on promoting multilateral cooperation and the international rules-based order.

The strategic partnership between South Africa and the European Union, which has yielded economic and social benefits for both parties, was also highlighted. The leaders discussed expanding this partnership into new areas of mutual interest, such as green hydrogen, critical minerals, and vaccines, to support regional integration and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.

Concluding the conversation, President Ramaphosa and President Michel agreed to convene a bilateral Summit at the earliest opportunity to further deepen and solidify their countries' cooperation.
