A 26-year-old man was tragically killed after being shot in the chest near the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, officials reported on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Vasudeva from Akhnoor area, was working as a cook for a company involved in construction work in the border zone, the officials revealed.

The incident occurred late Friday night at the Regal Border Outpost area. According to a preliminary investigation, Vasudeva was shot by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel who mistook him for an intruder due to his suspicious movement. Colleagues stated that he had stepped out of his tent to relieve himself when the shooting happened.

Vasudeva was immediately taken to the district hospital in Samba where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, officials said. Senior BSF and police officers have visited the scene and a detailed investigation is ongoing.

Hospital Medical Officer K. Jandyal confirmed that the victim arrived at the hospital around 11 pm with no vital signs. Despite all efforts, doctors were unable to revive him. He had sustained a bullet injury to the chest, and his body has been moved to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
