In a grave case of mistaken identity, a 26-year-old man named Vasudeva was killed when Border Security Force (BSF) troops opened fire upon detecting suspicious movement near a forward post along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, said officials on Saturday.

According to Samba Additional Superintendent of Police Surinder Choudhary, the tragedy unfolded late Friday night as the BSF personnel perceived suspicious activity. On challenging the individual, Vasudeva reportedly panicked and attempted to flee, prompting the troops to open fire. Critically injured, Vasudeva was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that Vasudeva, a cook employed by a construction company in the border area, had stepped out of his tented accommodation to relieve himself when he was shot. Senior BSF and police officers promptly visited the scene, and the deceased's body was released to his family post-mortem. An exgratia relief of Rs five lakh has been provided to his relatives, with further compensation measures being evaluated.
