The Union Law Ministry is set to present the high-level committee's report on 'one nation, one election' to the Union Cabinet, sources revealed on Friday.
This report submission is part of the 100-day agenda outlined by the Legislative Department within the law ministry, as directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The high-level committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its recommendations to President Droupadi Murmu on March 15, advocating for simultaneous elections for both Lok Sabha and state assemblies, followed by synchronized local body elections.
The committee proposed several constitutional amendments and suggested the formation of an 'Implementation Group' to ensure the execution of its recommendations. The initiative aims to conserve resources, promote development, and enhance social cohesion. An essential recommendation includes preparing a common electoral roll and voter ID cards in collaboration with state authorities. Additional suggestions by the Law Commission are expected, with the possibility of implementing simultaneous elections from 2029.
