China has called on the Dalai Lama to 'completely reflect' and 'thoroughly correct' his political propositions if talks are to occur, and urged the United States to respect the sensitivity of Tibet-related issues as Washington advances a stringent Tibet policy law.
In a media briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated, 'Our policy regarding communications and talks with the 14th Dalai Lama is consistent and clear. The essential issue is that the Dalai Lama must thoroughly correct his political stand.'
Lin's remarks followed recent comments by Penpa Tsering, leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, on leveraging the new US policy law to bring China to the negotiating table. During a Congressional visit to Dharamsala, US officials voiced strong criticisms of China's policy toward Tibet, urging Beijing to enter talks with the Dalai Lama, further intensifying the diplomatic tensions.
