Jharkhand's Forest Rights Dilemma: CM Soren Demands Action

Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren voiced concerns over the cancellation of thousands of forest rights applications at a workshop. He emphasized the need for accountability and urged officials to simplify the process of granting rights to forest dwellers for a respectful livelihood.

Amid escalating concerns about forest rights, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren raised a pressing issue on Monday regarding the cancellation of thousands of applications related to forest rights. Addressing a workshop named 'Abua Bir Abua Dishom Abhiyan' in Ranchi, Soren highlighted significant delays in implementing the Forest Rights Act of 2006.

'It has been 18 years since this Act came into effect, yet we are still far behind in giving titles of forest rights to the families living in the forest areas,' he remarked, stressing the urgency of the situation. Soren underlined that numerous applications for forest pattas (titles) have been arbitrarily canceled across state offices.

'They have to tell people why these applications have been canceled. The state government will take strict action against those officers who deliberately attempted to cancel the applications,' Soren warned. He pressed officials to grant forest dwellers the rights they deserve, thus empowering them to cultivate paddy, rabi crops, and forest produce for a dignified life. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of simplifying the title-granting process.
