Ukraine Seizes Foreign Cargo Ship for Illicit Grain Export

Ukraine detained a foreign cargo ship and its captain in the Black Sea for allegedly aiding Russia in exporting Ukrainian grain from Crimea. The vessel, under a central African flag, had docked multiple times in Sevastopol. The captain and crew could face charges for their involvement in the illegal exports.

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) announced on Thursday that it had seized a foreign cargo ship in the Black Sea near the Odesa region and detained its captain. The ship, flying a central African flag, is suspected of helping Moscow export Ukrainian grain from Russian-occupied Crimea.

The vessel reportedly docked multiple times at the Crimean port of Sevastopol in 2023-24 to load 'looted' agricultural products, according to the SBU. Ukrainian officials accuse Russia of stealing and destroying grain from the southern regions occupied since 2022.

The captain and 12 crew members allegedly helped Russia export metric tons of stolen Ukrainian grain to the Middle East. The captain, who is from a South Caucasus country, could face up to five years in prison for violating travel restrictions in Russian-occupied territories.

The Odesa region is crucial for Ukraine's Black Sea exports, which have continued without Russia's approval since Moscow withdrew from a UN-brokered deal allowing food exports during the ongoing conflict.
