Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday praised the Supreme Court's landmark judgment on maintenance for Muslim women, calling it a 'big step' towards equitable assistance regardless of religious differences.
The Supreme Court ruled that Muslim women could seek maintenance from their husbands under Section 125 of the CrPC, highlighting that this 'religion neutral' provision applies to all married women.
Dhankhar stressed the importance of uniform assistance for all, irrespective of their religion, while addressing representatives of an industry body. The court observed that Muslim women, whether married or divorced under Muslim law, could choose to seek remedy under Section 125 of the CrPC or the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, or both.
