Ukraine Seizes Foreign Ship Over Alleged Grain Smuggling

Ukraine detained a foreign cargo ship and its captain in the Black Sea near the Odesa region for allegedly helping Russia export stolen Ukrainian grain from Crimea. This rare action has raised concerns about potential retaliation amid Ukraine's peak grain export season. The ship had repeatedly docked in Crimea to load what Ukraine calls 'looted' grains.

Ukraine has seized a foreign cargo ship and detained its captain in the Black Sea near the Odesa region, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Thursday. The captain is suspected of aiding Russia in exporting stolen Ukrainian grain from the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula.

Since the 2022 conflict began, Kyiv has accused Moscow of pilfering and trading Ukrainian grain. While ship seizures have been rare, shipping sources are now worried about potential retaliations during the crucial grain export season. According to the SBU, the seized vessel made multiple voyages to the Crimean port of Sevastopol to load 'looted' agricultural products in 2023-24.

The vessel, identified as the Cameroon-flagged USKO MFU, has a Turkey-based owner who has not been reached for comment. The SBU stated that the detained captain and 12 crew members facilitated Russia in exporting stolen Ukrainian grain to the Middle East for sale. An investigation is ongoing to uncover more details and identify other individuals involved in this illegal activity.
